I’ve been making things for a long time. While the destination was always fantastic - little is as catharic as making something truly novel exist - the journey is oft as important. My skills and experience that have powered my career and defined my character are hard earned through chasing that creator high.
AI threatens that. I do not harbor the (frankly, justified) zealous hatred that many artists voice; nor do I adhere to their boycotting of the tools. I am not an AI maximalist tech bro, though. I also can’t deny that the act of creating that so thoroughly defined a significant chunk of me has been cheapened.
I have come to a decision of policy for myself - one that I think represents what we should expect from others - and will maintain this for my work.
Every word I write on this site will be written by me. I will use tools like spell check, grammar checking, etc, but will be the author of what you read. The value of this site is only realized by fully embracing that it is a microcosm of a human’s life, presented by and for humans. I will not allow that to be diluted.
But - I am a technologist. My content is often about research and building. And for that I will adopt the following policy.
Unless otherwise noted (as it will be rare otherwise, likely only for educational hobby projects) all projects will have an assumed usage of AI tools. This will be true for anything from late 2024 onward. Prior to that era coding tools were often less helpful autocomplete than what modern coding agents deliver.
If I do not thoroughly review or guide the AI in the architecture/design of a project, it will be labeled as such. These I share less to encourage its use (I call this boutique software, and generally I think this should be a one-person target audience) but for knowledge sharing and note taking. There’s still value to these projects - sometimes I just need a custom solution to work on the part I actually care about. While it may seem quaint in a few years, there’s still something to documenting the sheer amazement of what I can essentially conjure from natural language out of silicon.
